one step at a time...just one step at a time

So, I went on a hike today through the inland marsh trail at ogden dunes with my ecology class, in the rain btw. The reason we went there was to map where a certain plant, a flower, grows because it is the only thing the larval stage of the karner blue butterfly eats...which is endangered. We couldn't really find any, well, my professor told us a few different things were, got confused, and told us that maybe someone had destroyed its habitat...then finally decided she knew what it was, found one, and showed it to us. It's called wild lupine or Lupinus perrenis. I took a picture for future reference (no, that's not my hand):

After I came home I was concerned for this poor little butterfly. It's so cute!

So...after doing much research I concluded that wild lupine looks like this:

OBVIOUSLY has SIGNIFICANTLY different leaves. OBVIOUSLY NOT the same plant.

*sigh*

She also went on to tell us that the plant is also endangered and that bags of seed are like $5,000 or something crazy like that. I have this stuff growing in my yard (oh, and it seeds every year). I did find out a lot of this plant died out but they're doing conservation projects to grow more of it and bring it back. I guess it's picky about the soil it's in. Can't be too picky to grow in my yard...

She's doing a whole project on this which is why we were mapping where it was growing. She doesn't even know what she's looking for. WTF?

Writer's Block: Most memorable concert

What was the most memorable concert you ever attended? What made it so magical?

View 1501 Answers

The Gorillaz concert for sure. It was my very first concert ever, my favorite band ever, my favorite city ever, my favorite venue ever (although I hadn't been to any others yet at the time it is still my favorite one I've been to)...I just loved it. I absolutely loved it. It was snowing outside and I love the snow, I love winter. It wasn't a nasty sweaty concert because it was cold out, so that was a good thing. The only thing that sucked was the fact that Cassi went...buuuttt besides that it was amazing. And I pretty much just ignored her the whole time. I mean a room full of people smoking and singing along to Damon Albarn while the character's were on the screen. It certainly was magical. *sigh* I wish to see them again in concert someday.

1. Type out your name.
2. List a song that pops up in your mind for each letter of your name.
3. Tag as many people as there are letters of your name.

B: Because I Got High by Afro Man(sadly that's the first thing that popped into my head...haha)
O: Optigan 1 by Blur
N: Nth Degree by Morningwood
N: Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth by the Dandy Warhols
I: Idiotech by Radiohead
E: English Summer Rain by Placebo

no tags, you can do it if you want :)

I just wanted to see how to do this..

A.) Post ten of any pictures currently on your hard drive that you think are self-expressive.

B.) NO CAPTIONS! It must be like we're speaking with images and we have to interpret your visual language just like we have to interpret your words.

C.) They must ALREADY be on your hard drive -- no googling or flickr! They have to have been saved to your folders sometime in the past. They must be something you've saved there because it resonated with you for some reason.

D.) You do NOT have to answer any questions about any of your pictures if you don't want to. You can make them as mysterious as you like. Or you can explain them away as much as you like.

Imagine you manage a coven of baseball-playing vampires. The Cullen family is really strong this year and you want to bring in a ringer. Which currently active MLB baseball player do you sire?

3 inmates escaped from the Michigan City jail, two murderers and one rapist. Awesome, right?

"There should obviously be concern, because the individuals are, in fact, dangerous," said John Schrader, a public information officer for the prison.

A little girl walked to the well in her backyard. She glared down at the bottom. It was dirty and wet, like her life, she thought. The smell of a summer barbeque and laughter were in the air. But all she saw was fog. Darkness like the dank memories of her past. She wondered how far down the well went. She could see the bottom and the bucket that was used to bring up water when the well was in working condition and clean. But something told her that the bottom she saw was not the end. In her story books nothing was ever what it seemed. "If I jump," she said to herself,"maybe I'll float down like Alice. Maybe there's a happy place down there." Her father eyed her from the picnic table, like any good, watchful parent would. Or so her mother thought as she turned her gaze from her husband to the empty bowl she was carrying as she walked back into her quaint, suburban home. The seasons had just turned to summer and her mother's flowers were all about the yard in their glory. But the girl didn't see them. She saw dead leaves and mushrooms and feathers from crows that had come and gone. "What if I jump?" she thought to herself.

"Nemo" is Latin for "no one", and also (as νέμω) Greek for "I give what is due" (see Nemesis).

If I have a son, I kind of want to name him Nemo. :)
